Seed Change’s nursery is now located on the grounds of the Luiche Secondary School in Kamara Village. We are very lucky to be using this land as the Luiche School is centrally located to our program villages and is only 15 mins from Kigoma town (our previous nursery site was a grueling two and a half hour drive from town) and are sincerely grateful to the board of the school for granting our request. The nursery site is about 10 acres and bordered by the eponymous Luiche River – the source of all our irrigation water. Here is the school on Google maps. (I check daily to see if the image has been updated and hence showing our nursery. Apparently updating shots of rural Tanzania are not very high on the to-do list at Google. But we will keep you posted).
Luiche Secondary School is a rural high school teaching Form 1 to Form 4 (kids range in age from 12 to 17). In return for using their land we pump water for the school to use as well as provide an educational resource. Our Nursery Manager, Said Ruba, recently spoke to a group of Form 4 students about the basics of palm oil production. If there are any teachers, ex-teachers, educators or just handy people in general who would like to come to Kigoma and help us repay some of Luiche Secondary’s generosity by volunteering some time, let us know and we will arrange it. You can come for a week, a month or a year (or longer!) and either teach some classes (English would be pretty handy but all secondary school classes are taught in English so all subjects are welcome), if time is short perhaps run a few teacher training sessions with Luiche’s teachers, or help in numerous other ways as well.
We hope this is the start of a long term relationship between Seed Change and Luiche Secondary, so it would be great if that relationship could be extended to our wonderful overseas supporters in the wider Seed Change family.
